About the event
Brancusi called it the “sculpture of essence” — a stripping away of detail to reveal what lies within.
In this exhibition titled In essence, sculptors Lucy Unwin and Dominic Welch come together in an exploration of what it means to be.
Rooted in the natural world, they are both fascinated with embryonic, instinctive forms.
Unwin is allured by both the human and the natural world. Her designs reflect an amalgamation of native shapes like eroded sea shells and fossils, combined with the delicate lines of the human body. Often plant-like in their structure, these organic shapes represent the ever-present influence of our natural environment on the human body — both physically and emotionally.
Welch’s purity of form is inspired by the organic logic of seeds, pods, shells and fish, suggesting natural harmonies that both calm the senses and spark the imagination. The inner energy of each sculpted piece is consolidated…
