About the event
Ava Khera explores the power and poetry of the female form, painting her subjects in spaces where nature, emotion and symbolism converge. Influenced by her Indian heritage and her upbringing by a strong single mother, she examines themes of feminine empowerment, resilience and vulnerability, with a particular focus on women from under-represented communities.
Based in Birmingham, Ava’s practice is defined by expressive mark-making and meticulous detail. She builds her surfaces through layers of impasto, carved textures and palette-knife work, creating paintings that balance bold physicality with delicate nuance. Her narratives draw from myth, the natural world and reflections on modern womanhood, echoing the storytelling of Herbert James Draper and the Pre-Raphaelites, while embracing the refined palettes of Lawrence Alma-Tadema.
In 2023, Khera won the UK Women in Art Prize Flux Award and exhibited at the Mall Galleries for the inaugural Women in Art Fair. Most recently, she received 1st Prize…
